Morpeth

Morpeth another of our County Towns, being surrounded on three sides by the river Wansbeck, and bypassed by the main A1 road, running through the County, it dates back to Norman Times.
In the market place area stands the Old Town Hall, by Vanburgh and the Clock Tower where the curfew bell is rung each night at 8pm. Morpeth Park
There are some pleasant walks along the river and boats for hire in the summer. The " Carlise Park" in the picture, with part of the old Castle behind, is always a real showpiece of colour with well kept lawns, borders and pathways.
Two other places of interest in the town are, the Old Chantry, which years ago was home to one of the countrys first free Grammar Schools, but now a Crafts and Bagpipe Museum, where you can learn about the history of the "Northumbrian Pipes"or a visit to the house which was once the home of "Admiral Collingwood".
To the East of Morpeth are the mining area's of Ashington and Bedlington, sadly most of the pits are now closed, but are slowly being replaced with new Industries.
To the West, a web of roads linking to more picturesque villages and places like "Wallington Hall" or "Cragside" (Rothbury) well worth a visit.
Morpeth is only 11 miles from Newcastle by road and to the Athletics world, the route is well known for its Road Race held annually, on New Years Day.
