Kielder Water and Forest


Kielder Water the largest man made lake in Europe covering 2600 acres is 9 miles long (14.4 km) and can hold 41 million gallons of water.
At the east end of the lake the dam, built between 1975 and 1981, is three quarters of a mile long (1.2 km) and 169 feet (52 metres) high. The building, standing alone in the water in front of the dam, is the Valve Tower.

This beautiful lake is surrounded by Kielder Forest, part of the Border Forest, is Britain's largest single wooded area, a landscape where many specie's of wild birds and animals, can be found.
The area also offers a wide variety of recreational activities, including - riding, walking, mountain-biking, car rallying, husky-racing, sailing, water- skiing, and fishing.
Calling at the visitors centre at "Tower Knowe" people will receive all the information they require, plus the full history of this flooded valley.
