Berwick-upon-Tweed

Berwick, is a popular town, for tourist's and has many interest's to offer, there's no better way to view the town, than taking a walk around the ramparts, that circle the centre,with views of the coast line,the mouth of the river tweed with its three bridges.The tallest of these,carrying the main eastcoast rail link between Scotland and England,and was the target of bombing raids, during the war, to sever links between the two country's.

There is a Holiday Caravan park, on the sea front, from which, holidaymakers can enjoy the hospitality, mixing in with the local people and enjoy the things Berwick has to offer. Many Tourist's use the town as a base , to explore the Scottish Borders and Northumberland.
During the Fishing Season, at the mouth of the river, men can be seen, out in their small boats, casting their nets, to catch the large amounts of Salmon, moving up river to spawn. The Salmon Fisherie's Co, export these fish all over the world, to celebrate each season,the Feast of Tweedmouth is held, to crown the "Salmon Queen".
When you leave Berwick, you could take a souvenir tin of "Berwick Cockles" with you. A boiled sweet, only made in Berwick by W'm Cowe & Son established in 1801.

England's northern most town, guarding the mouth of the River Tweed, has a long and varied history. Once a Royal Borough of Scotland, it was constantly fought over, changing hands between England and Scotland fourteen times. The need to secure the town resulted in the construction of the incredible Elizabethan Ramparts which completely encircle the centre.

Built between 1553 and 1566 to combat artillery, they are regarded as the best preserved in Europe and are walked by visitors every day of the year. The River Tweed is spanned by three marvellous bridges and the architectural features gracing many town buildings are a delight. Berwick-upon-Tweed has a thriving shopping area, Arts are fully represented at the Maltings and sporting opportunities are offered at Bonarsteads Leisure Centre.
